What is PTDF scholarship

The PTDF Scholarship refers to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund Scholarship, PTDF scholarship program is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). It's aimed at building Nigerian youths capacity and expertise to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

PTDF Scholarship Portal

PTDF Scholarship portal is the official website where applicants of the PTDF scholarship create account, verify their NIN as Nigerian citizens, make payment, fill the scholarship application form and submit for review.

The official PTDF scholarship portal is https://ptdf.gov.ng/, prospective applicants can visit the website to fill the online form and process their application.

What does PTDF scholarship cover

PTDF Scholarship covers Undergraduate, MSc, and Ph.D programme. PTDF scholarship offers both overseas, and local studies in Nigerian universities. There are two types of PTDF scholarship:

1.      PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS)

·         For Master's (MSc) and Doctorate (PhD) degrees.

·         Funded studies in top universities abroad, especially in the UK, Germany, France, Malaysia, and China.

·         Covers tuition, flight tickets, living expenses, insurance, and allowances.

2.      PTDF In-Country Scholarship Scheme (ISS)

·         For undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students studying in Nigerian universities.

·         Focuses on promoting and supporting local institutions and capacity building.

What is the eligibility for Applying for PTDF scholarship 2025

The following are criteria’s for applying for PTDF scholarship:

1.      Must be a Nigerian citizen.

2.      Should possess strong academic credentials (typically at least a Second-Class Upper Division for MSc programs).

3.      Course of study should align with oil and gas, engineering, geosciences, environmental sciences, ICT, management, or other PTDF-designated priority areas.

4.      MSc applicants must have completed the NYSC program or be nearing completion.

5.      PhD candidates are required to submit a research proposal that is relevant to the oil and gas sector.

 

How much does PTDF scholarship pay?

The PTDF scholarship covers tuition fees varying from $1,200  and above, below we’ve shared a breakdown of the fee payments by PTDF.

For Overseas Scholarships:

(MSc and PhD – UK, Germany, France, and other partner countries)

·         Tuition fees: Fully covered.

·         Living expenses: Monthly stipends, which vary by location (e.g., higher in the UK than in some other countries). It can range between $1,200 to $2,500/month depending on the cost of living in the host country.

·         Flight tickets: Return economy airfare.

·         Accommodation: Often paid for or included in the stipend.

·         Insurance and visa costs: Usually covered.

·         Allowance for books and thesis/dissertation.

For Local Scholarships:

(Nigerian universities)

·         MSc: Around ₦300,000 to ₦500,000 per year.

·         PhD: Around ₦500,000 to ₦700,000 per year.

How to apply for PTDF scholarship 2025

The PTDF scholarship is done online in the PTDF scholarship portal, above we’ve written about the PTDF scholarship portal. All applications, submission and review of the application form is done online on the PTDF official portal, below are the procedures to apply:

1. Go to the provided URL to create your application account and fill in your details.
You will receive an email with instructions on how to log in and set your password.

2. Log in using your email as your username and the password you created based on the email instructions.

3. Before starting a new application, click the “Verify NIN” button, you will be directed to fill a form inclusive of your NIN, First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, after filling the form, click on the verify button. You will be expected to make a payment of 500 Naira via paystack, if payment is successful you can proceed to continue application.

Note: before making payment of 500 Naira, ensure to copy the ref ID number of the transaction, perhaps there is a network issue, you can make a complaint using the ref ID.

4. If you’re just verifying your NIN for the first time, fill out the required fields and agree to the terms (note: a verification fee may apply).
Important: If your NIN verification fails, do not try again immediately, as you will be charged again.
Instead, click the red button that says “Click here for all failed NIN verification”, then enter your payment reference number and NIN to complete the process.

5. You will be asked to either accept or decline a disclaimer. You must read and accept the terms and conditions to continue. If you do not agree, you can decline and stop your application.

6. Fill in all the required fields carefully. Make sure your uploaded files meet the format and size requirements. Uploading incorrect files may cause errors.

7. You must also accept or decline the terms that allow PTDF to assign you to a different university than the ones you selected.
Next, choose your first, second, and third choice universities and courses.

Note: If your first choice is a German university, you must select Abuja as your interview location.
MSc applicants should upload a Statement of Purpose, while PhD applicants must upload a Research Proposal.

8. Upload the additional required documents such as your birth certificate and LGA certificate.
Please make sure that all PDF files are less than 300KB in size.

9. Review your application carefully before submitting it.
Once submitted, you cannot make any changes.

When is the Deadline for the PTDF Scholarship application 2025

The deadline for the application of PTDF scholarship is 4th June, 2025. All applications must be submitted on or before the deadline.
